For the first time in 15 years both Lincoln Junior High 7th and 8th grade girls basketball teams are NELMSC CHAMPIONS.

7th grade

This past Saturday the 7th grade Lady Red Storm walked away from Edgewood Middle School as NELMSC Champions!  They won 3 tough games over the course of two days including two victories against both Warsaw middle schools.  Thursday night the girls held the lead throughout the game and fought hard to keep Lakeview a few points away winning 39-33.  Saturday morning the Red Storm won against Milford by a score of 39-3, and then beat Edgewood in the championship by a score of 41-35.  The girls worked hard on defense to secure the victories throughout the tourney.

8th Grade

For the 8th Grade Lady Redstorm their rode to victory started on Thursday when they traveled to take on the Lakeview Tigers of Warsaw. Lincoln started the game playing in their go to 1-3-1 defense, but with Brighton Bird out with a concussion it was just not as effective. Lincoln quickly switched to a man-to-man defense causing some havoc for the Tigers and took an 11-7 lead after the first quarter. Elaina McDonald stepped up and scored 4 of her 6 points during the first quarter. Defense was key for the Lady Redstorm as they only allowed 5 total points for the next two quarters, resulting in a 20-12 lead going into the fourth quarter. Taylor Delp had herself a quarter scoring 6 of her 11 points in the final stanza. Halle Hopple hit two big free throws with 30 seconds left to seal the deal for the Lady Redstorm, she would end the game with 4 points. KayLee Dragani was challenged with guarding one of Lakeviews best players, she accepted that challenge while also scoring 5 points. Ellie Jones ended her solid game with 4 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals. The Lady Redstorm advanced to the championship game with a 30-20 victory.

On Saturday the Lady Redstorm faced off with the Edgewood Tigers, also of Warsaw, in the championship game. In their regular season meeting Edgewood defeated Lincoln 35-34, but redemption would be sweet as the Lady Redstorm would walk away Conference Champions for the first time in 15 years, defeating the Tigers 30-25. Team defense was the key for the Lady Redstorm’s victory. They played a 3-2 zone which caused several turnovers and created a lot of forced shots. Dragani and Jones both played exceptionally well on the defensive end causing several steals and getting their hands on a ton of passes. Both also did an excellent job of handling the pressure of Edgewood in the 4th quarter. Jones would end the game with 3 points. Offensively, Taylor Delp ran the show, scoring 17 of the Redstorm’s 30 points and ended the game with a double-double, collecting 5 offensive rebounds and 5 defensive rebounds. Elaina McDonald scored 5 points and gathered some big rebounds throughout the game. Hopple would play well on both ends, handling the ball, playing great defense, and scoring 5 points.

With Bird out for the tournament the message was “next person up” and that next person for the Lady Redstorm ended up being the entire team, players 1-15. Jadyn Beran, Kylee Gaines, and Claire McDonald saw minimal playing time during the tournament, but their positive attitudes and work ethic at practice contributed to the teams victories. Without teammates like Paige Feece, Megyn Mann, Lauren Manges, and Amaya Ameling pushing everyone practice, playing great defense/offense on those who did dress for the tournament, this team would not have been as prepared as they were for the tournament. Bird, Jaylee Ramirez and Rilynn Ames all remained positive even while dealing with injuries. Every player on the 8th Grade Lady Redstorm basketball team walked away NELMCS Conference Champions!
